Butch-Dog
December 28, 1990 - April 7, 2007
|
My best friend closed his eyes last
night, As his head was in my hand.
The thoughts that scurried through
my head, As I cradled him in my arms.
Were of his younger, puppy years,
And OH...his many charms.
Today, there was no gentle nudge
With an intense "I love you gaze",
Only a heart that's filled with tears
Remembering our joy filled days.
But an Angel just appeared to me,
And he said, "You should cry no more,
GOD also loves our canine friends,
Butch will be waiting for you at Heaven's door."

The one absolutely unselfish friend that man can have in this selfish world,
the one that never deserts him, the one that never proves ungrateful
or treacherous, is his dog...
He will kiss the hand that has no food to offer;
he will lick the wounds and sores
that come with the roughness of the world...
When all other friends desert, he remains.

Butch-Dog is my first dog after college. I found him in a pound in Blytheville
Arkansas when we were stationed at an Air Force Base. We adopted Butch at
around 12 weeks of age, he had been abused. I just couldn't pass up such a cute
puppy. Life is not boring with a Beagle/Lab mix. Butch had a very hard time
with people, especially men he didn't know. I think he barked at my neightbor
(while behind us) whom he saw everyday for about two years; he simply wasn't a
very confident dog.

Butch & Trish Flyball Tournament 1996
|
|
This all changed for Butch when he started playing Flyball in 1996. Butch found
his niche! Once running, he averaged 4.9 seconds to 5.0 seconds. He could
maintain his speed all day. And believe it or not this little guy, who was
terrified of men, let men he didn't know measure him with a wicket at the
Flyball tournaments without batting an eye. The confidence he found in Flyball
crossed the line into his everyday life. Once he was a dog that barked
everytime a guest would make eye contact, to a dog that barks initially at the
doorbell. Once you're inside he's fine. He is truly my husband's dog but is
extremely loving to those he sees as family. His idea of a good time is staying
in bed with you all day or just sitting next to his favorite people.
